Both Alice and Evey find these new worlds by wandering off on their own (which as we all know, can be very dangerous if you are a defenseless young girl). Just as Alice falls down the rabbit hole so does Evey Hammond in V for Vendetta. Both girls go through many fantastical trials in their respective journeys through new worlds to gain a sense of awakening in worlds that are often unfeeling and cruel. In particular, I found the character of Evey Hammond reminded me of Alice. The Wolf threatens Little RedвЂ™s physical well-being whereas Moses for Mary threatens her perception of colonialism the gender stereotypes that arise from it.Д®vey Hammond, V for VendettaвЂ“ Alice, Alice in WonderlandД¬onsidering V, the protagonist (and self-proclaimed antagonist) of V for Vendetta, lives in a hidden, almost magical world it was not hard to see how V for VendettaВ has similarities to Alice in Wonderland. In Little Red Riding Hood this threat is visceral, however in The Grass is Singing this threat is psychological. In Both Little Red Riding HoodВ and The Grass is Singing, both female protagonists are threatened by the world beyond the domestic sphere. Mary can not see Moses beyond being the Wolf without keeping her sanity intact because she is not ready to see the humanity beyond her and MosesвЂ™ colonial stereotypes. MosesвЂ™ presence is just as unwanted as the WolfвЂ™s because it brings the danger of the outside world into the home in MaryвЂ™s mind. When Moses enters the home, it is like the Wolf entering because he represents the masculine reality of a world existing beyond the innocence of the domestic sphere. Moses thus becomes the Wolf in MaryвЂ™s mind- the menacing presence of colonialism she fears will violate her. Mary fears the Zimbabweans in the field, but when they cross from the fields into the domestic sphere she can not take it. When her marriage to Dick takes her from the place she feels most comfortable and puts her into the African wilderness she begins to lose her sanity. She loves living in town because it removes her far from the realities of Africa and the natives living there. Mary feels safest and most complete when she is in an urban, domesticated setting. Although we know Mary and Moses to be more than simply the colonial stereotypes they present, their relationship is still very much like Little Red and the WolfвЂ™s. MaryвЂ™s gender and ethnicity make her into a sexual object that needs to be protected from the native violent savagery characterized in Moses (Aghazadeh 111). The binary between Mary and Moses exists on colonial stereotypes that exist based on white sexuality neurosis and fear of black power (Wikipedia).

Mary perceives herself as an вЂњEnglish RoseвЂќ in the home who must be protected from the wildВ Zimbabweans living in the African outback.

Moses is like the Wolf in that he represents the dangerous natural world coming into the domestic sphere and preying on the feminine presence inside. By eating Little Red in a place characterized by warmth and love, he has thus violated more than the young girl herself, but the very place that is supposed to ensure the safety and protection of innocent femininity. Little Red has been warned about the wolves in the wild, but she has not been warned about them in the home. The Wolf has trespassed the domestic realm, and it is in the domestic realm where he becomes the most dangerous.

When Little Red arrives she questions the changed appearance of her grandmother, but she is deceived by the WolfвЂ™s domesticated get-up so much so that he succeeds in gobbling up the young girl. He then races over to her grandmotherвЂ™s house, eats the grandmother and dons her clothes. Out in the woods he is able to get the vital information of where Little Red is heading (which, of course, is her grandmotherвЂ™s house). The Wolf encounters Little Red when she is removed from the domestic sphere. He is characterized as theВ villainВ from the onset as he symbolizes menaceВ for innocent girls (Hanks 72). The Wolf, on the other hand, is a loathsome, dangerous creature who preys on the innocent. As a loved young girl the outside/ woods is dangerous- a space that will not offer her the protection that the domestic sphere does. These spaces are characterized by being вЂњgoodвЂќ and вЂњbadвЂќ for Little Red. The domestic sphere is where she is loved and protected from the cruelty of nature. Both stories have naive females encountering the oppressive force of wild masculinity (by this I mean wild as in terms of natureвЂ™s wilderness). I think MaryвЂ™s relationship with Moses is a similar tale to Little Red Riding HoodвЂs relationship with the Wolf, but it lacks the innocence of the fairy tale.
